Professor Van de Walle has been awarded the 2025 Heinrich Welker Award, in recognition of “the development and application of computational methods to elucidate the properties of interfaces, defects, doping, polarization, and loss mechanisms in compound semiconductors.” He received the award at a ceremony in Banff, Canada, on May 28, in conjunction with the 51st International Symposium on Compound Semiconductors (ISCS) and the 36th International Conference on Indium Phosphide and Related Materials (IPRM).

The Welker Award was established in 1976 to recognize outstanding research in the area of III-V compound semiconductors. Past awardees include numerous luminaries in the field of semiconductors, including Nick Holonyak, Zhores Alferov, Lester Eastman, Federico Capasso, Isamu Akasaki, George Craford, James Harris, Dieter Bimberg, Chennupati Jagadish, Bernard Gil, and Hideo Ohno, as well as UC Santa Barbara’s own Herbert Kroemer, Claude Weisbuch, Umesh Mishra, and Larry Coldren.
