In Summer 2014, Wennie attended the first Diversity in Minerals, Metals, and Materials Professions (DMMM1) summit as part of the annual meeting of The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS), where she met Prof. Millie Dresselhaus. Wennie was inspired, along with fellow UCSB Materials grad students David Hwang and Natalie Larson, to present at DMMM2 the next year, and then to organize a symposium on diversity in the Materials world themselves in 2016. Their symposium, entitled "Transforming the Diversity Landscape", aimed "to address challenges of the current diversity landscape in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and to provide concrete actions to promote diversity."

Did we mention she got her picture taken with Millie Dresselhaus?!
